Setien Finally Takes Over Barca

Quique Setien has officially taken over at the Camp Nou stadium! The 61-year-old put pen to paper on a two-and-half-a-year deal on Tuesday afternoon.

The coach was presented by the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Eric Abidal.

Bartomeu confirmed that Setien’s appointment is down to his footballing philosophy which is very similar to the one of Johan Cruyff.

“Thanks to Quique for accepting the challenge of training Barca and we would like to thank Ernesto Valverde for everything he has done for us,” the president said.

“It’s a pleasure for you to be here, Quique. Setien has a coaching approach that matches the idea of Barca. A coach who looks after the game and the style.

“We are in the middle of the season and we needed a boost. We know that Setien is a big Cruyff fan and that’s why it was ideal for him to come.

“Thanks again to Ernesto Valverde. There is an excellent relationship. Everyone speaks wonders of him.”

Setien signed a deal until 2022. Quique took charge of his first session as Barcelona coach on Tuesday morning, before putting pen to paper on the contract.

The 61-year-old worked at Betis between 2017 and 2019. The Verdiblancos finished sixth on his debut season in charge which was their best result since 2005.

During his illustrious career, Setien used to coach Racing Santander, Poli Ejido, Logrones, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis.

As for Ernesto Valverde, he already said his goodbyes to everyone at the club. He was officially sacked on January 13 after two and a half years in charge of Barcelona.
